WHAT TO EXPECT
Starting therapy can bring about many emotions - excitement, anxiety, uncertainty, anticipation, and even skepticism. If you're feeling any of these things you're not alone! Read on to learn more about what to expect when you come to my office and how I approach the therapeutic process.
THE PROCESS
Consultation:
Before we meet, I will schedule a free 15 minute phone consultation with you to learn more about your needs, answer any questions you have, discuss availability, and determine if we are a good fit for working together. If our schedules align and we determine we're a good fit, we will schedule an intake session either at my Raleigh office or virtually.
Intake:
Prior to our first session, I will send you some documents and questionnaires to complete, including a "Client History Form" that allows you to provide more information about your background and current needs. This document will serve as a starting point for our intake session.
An intake session is a little different than most sessions. It's an opportunity for us to get to know one another, and for me to get an overview of your background, needs, and goals for counseling. It is not uncommon for there to be more to share than can fit in one session, and that's okay! Trust the process, and know that all of the important things will come out with time. I view the first few sessions as an opportunity for us to get to know one another, and build a solid foundation for our ongoing work together.
Ongoing Sessions:
The frequency of sessions will depend on your needs and availability. My general approach to counseling is relaxed and collaborative, and you will lead the way regarding what topics we discuss on a given day. Some days we need to "talk about the weather" for a bit before jumping in, other days you may feel like you're ready to dive in and discuss your feelings or what's been on your mind. Sometimes we may not be sure why a particular topic or story comes to mind, only to make a connection down the road that provides some new insight or knowledge. In my experience, therapy is more about the process that unfolds over time, rather than a specific topic we discuss on a given day.
